A don't-miss '03 Burgundy from the heart of Jadot

If there is an unsuspected treasure trove of red Burgundy wines, it is the vineyards of Beaune, at the very heart of the Côte d'Or. While technically the commune of Beaune offers no grand crus, it can boast of some truly grand vins. One of the best is the luscious 2003 Beaune Clos des Ursules from Louis Jadot.

The Clos des Ursules falls within a distinctive group of Jadot wines designated Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot. Heritage indeed. This little plot, which lies in the premier cru vineyard of Vignes Franches, is owned entirely by Jadot and has long held pride of place in the company's imposing portfolio. It's hardly surprising that Jadot should hang its hat on a Beaune wine. The city of Beaune, which is the business center of the Côte de Beaune, is where Jadot maintains its world headquarters.

But it's also true that the Clos des Ursules - named for the Ursuline Convent that originally owned these vineyards in the 17th century - occupies rich, well-positioned terroir. And the proof is in the glass: an irresistible combination of deep color, ample red fruit flavors, ripe tannin, good acidity and enduring structure. In plain terms, the 2003 Clos des Ursules is a gorgeous wine not to be missed, and in these days of rising Burgundy prices it's a stunning value to boot.

We can offer the 2003 Clos des Ursules for $354 per sixpack, which works out to $59 per bottle.
