Moreau's grand cru Chablis in magnums is celebration worthy
Here's a tip of the glass to Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils, a great family of the Chablis region that made a belated debut as producer with the 2002 vintage. What we offer you is Moreau's sublime grand cru 2002 Chablis 'Les Clos,' an exquisitely fashioned chardonnay that's perfect for celebrations of all kinds. We've brought in a good supply in magnums - double the size of a regular bottle - at a price you might expect to see for standard bottles of grand cru white Burgundy.
For generations, the Moreau name has loomed large in Chablis, that island-like annex of Burgundy just to the north of the Côte d'Or. But the Moreau family, which owns extensive vineyards in the region, has traditionally sold its grapes to an independently owned 'négociant' company that also bears its name. Recently the family, headed by Christian and his son Fabien, severed its relationship with the négociant business and created the Domaine Moreau to make wine from its own grapes.
This extraordinary 2002 'Les Clos' may fairly be called the banner cuvée of Domaine Moreau's first release. It is indeed emblematic of the fabulous white wines produced throughout Burgundy in 2002. Beyond its seductive floral aromas, Moreau's 'Les Clos' blends flavors of citrus and melon with a buttery feel not typically associated with Chablis. You'll also find a vibrant chalkiness and stony minerality that plainly bespeak the soil of 'Les Clos' – a point of pride for the veteran vigneron Christian.
Our price is indeed heady - $120 per magnum! While the big format is ideal for aging this noble wine, the large bottles are also highly appropriate for festive dinner parties now. Make no mistake, the 2002 'Les Clos' already provides enormous pleasure.
